Welcome to the State Road 46 (SR 46) Lake Jesup project website. The SR 46 Lake Jesup Bridge is predominantly located in Seminole County; however, the center span of the bridge is located in Volusia County (see Location Map). This project website is designed to be informative and it will be updated regularly. This website includes a project overview, lists project team members, details the project schedule, discusses the project status, describes public information meeting opportunities, shares links to other websites, and lists project contact information.
The SR 46 Lake Jesup Bridge Replacement project was advertised by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as a Design-Build contract in 2007. The project was awarded to the Joint Venture of Johnson Bros. Corporation and Misener Marine Construction, Inc. along with the lead designer Wilbur Smith Associates. A Design-Build project combines the design and construction phases into one step. This combination can reduce the overall project schedule by as much as 18 months in comparison to the traditional FDOT process. With this shorter process, there are also more opportunities to forge partnerships between stakeholders that extend from the planning studies through to construction. This partnering is especially valuable because of the need for safeguarding the environment. Lake Jesup is an environmentally sensitive area with water quality and navigational issues.
The Florida Department of Transportation District Five will replace the existing bridge with a new medium level structure that will span the northern entrance of Lake Jesup. The new bridge will be about 3,700 feet in length. Reconstruction and realignment of the roadway and bridge approaches will also be constructed both east and west of Lake Jesup. The total project length is approximately one and a half miles long.
Other components of the project include demolition and disposal of the existing bridge structure, existing fish camp, pavement, dirt removal, and grading. Removal of pavement along the existing SR 46 causeway and demolition of the existing bridge after opening the new bridge will also be completed.
