The SR 46 Lake Jesup Bridge is predominantly located in Seminole County; however, the center span of the bridge is located in Volusia County. As shown above, the new bridge will replace the existing bridge located east of the City of Sanford. The project limits on SR 46 extend from approximately 1,800 feet west of Lake Jesup to 1,400 feet east of the Lake.
The Florida Department of Transportation District Five will replace the bridge with a new medium level structure that will span the northern entrance of Lake Jesup. The new bridge will be about 3,700 feet in length. Reconstruction and realignment of the roadway and bridge approaches will also be constructed both east and west of Lake Jesup. The total project length is approximately one and a half miles long. During this project, the causeway and existing bridge will be removed. Removal of the causeway will increase hydraulic connection between the river and lake. This newly designed structure will include a closed drainage system to collect water from the bridge and carry it to stormwater ponds for water quality treatment.
Wetland restoration and enhancement will take place in the area of the old fish camps and will include the removal of causeway fill material. The existing causeway will be graded down to an elevation conducive for the creation of new wetlands. Restoration activities will remove pollutants associated with the boat docks and poor septic facilities found in the old fish camps. The goal is to restore the historic marsh system in this area. Wetland maintenance will allow for desirable wetland vegetation to colonize the area offering many benefits to fish and wildlife. The restored marsh will provide habitat for fish, as well as foraging and nesting opportunities for a variety of bird species from wading birds to birds of prey.
